In the bleak mid winter

The view from my bedroom window last week
OK so I know that the title of this post is from a very famous Christmas carol and that the festive period is well and truly over, but for me I feel like I am in the very middle of winter and winter is bleak to me. It is my friends, the January blues.

I'm a real sufferer of the January blues. Winter and I are not good bed fellows and by the middle/end of February I am climbing the walls as I can no longer face another day of 15 layers, the temperature being in single figures, and the grey dank drizzle that all signify winter.

Where I am, we have had weeks of rain; meaning floods and mud everywhere, followed by a week of snow which was lovely for all of five minutes before it froze and getting around was a nightmare and now we are back to lashing rain, howling gales and even more mud.

So instead of being a miserable old so and so which I usually am at this time of year, I've decided to count my blessings and think what I can do which will bring me out of my January misery. So......

  1. I am going to enjoy snuggling down in front of the fire, with a good book or two
  2. I am going to dance wildly and stupidly around my living room to some old '80s classics
  3. Have more date nights at the cinema, after all once you are in the cinema you can't tell what season it currently is! (plus I always get pic n mix!)
  4. Try and get into baking more - baking and I are also not the best of friends
  5. Start looking at colour charts as I fancy a change to some of my home decor
  6. Have a great big hot chocolate (now and then) with all the trimmings, you know marshmallows, chocolate sprinkles and lashings of squirty cream.
So what are you all doing to beat the January blues?

  1. The January blues have well and truly set in but I'm trying to beat them away while longing for the spring time! Snuggling down by the fire is always such a lovely thing to do! I also want to bake a little bit more and perhaps indulge in a few too many bubble baths!

    2. Oooh yes I'd forgotten about bubble baths! I shall add them to my list, there is nothing like a good soak in the tub with some delicious bath bombs/bubbles, maybe a face mask and a candle burning in the background. Winter is all about bubble baths 'cos they just don't have the same appeal in the summer months! I would love it if you would do a similar post Jennie, I think January/February is a real downer for a lot of folk, the joy of Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas is over and all we have to look forward to is January's credit card bills and weeks of dankness before the emergence of Spring. So anything we can do to lift others spirits in these winter months is great, I think everyone should do a post on it! x

  2. Kay - I'm coming round to yours to dance wildly round your living room with you! Cinema sounds like a lovely idea (popcorn is my downfall!). I usually feel really down beginning of January (when my brothers leave) - the stupid weather has been getting right on my nerves lately too and I've not been able to get to the gym very often - that's my way of escaping with my ipod and sweating it out - makes me feel better. The only saving grace is that it is starting to get lighter in the mornings/evenings so spring won't be long (she says!). Right - when are we going for this hot chocolate - sounds wonderful! (sorry I appear to have written a small article here!) xx

    1. You would be very welcome to join in my wild living room dancing Jenny! I always find dancing a great stress reliever and uplifter :) and we can definitely stop for hot choccy afterwards. After all with all the calories we will have burned off slogging it out to 80's classics, we will deserve it! ;) Have to agree with you the saving grace is that the evenings are drawing out now, Spring will be here soon if we can just hang on long enough! x

  3. I planned a little weekend break away and that did us the power of good. Without it I'd probably have needed to pop round to yours for the 80s classics ;)

    1. You would be more than welcome whether you'd had a break away or not. I think I'm starting a little 'disco' in my lounge lol!

  4. You know, today I went on a walk and the sun was shining and it actually felt like Spring. Now that January is over I am starting to look forward - whilst enjoying lots of evenings by the open fire to make the most of the rest of winter. :) x
